Spec Piece 3 - 'About me' page for a garden designer

The Client

I wrote this piece for a self-employed garden designer who is looking for more clients in his area (Somerset in South West England).

The Challenge

Prospective clients may not know what a garden designer does, and how they can benefit from having their garden reworked. They may worry about the cost, or see their garden as being untameable. They may not know what solutions are available, or how he can create easy-to-maintain gardens.

The Solution

I wanted to paint a picture of what the gardener could create. Vivid and sensual language was used to create a tranquil and beautiful image before going into further detail.

The webpage asks customers to imagine sitting in one of Jeff’s finished gardens and enjoying the benefits. It also addresses concerns customers might have, and outlines extra reasons to engage him, such as his extensive training.

I developed a character for the page – it has the voice of someone both friendly and professional. This encourages calls to Jeff’s telephone number or approaches through the site’s contact page. Bullet points are used to highlight the benefits, and the white space improves the page’s readability.

One of the biggest benefits of garden designing is the boost it can give your home’s value – and that lead to my choice of headline.

The page aims to evoke interest in what Jeff can bring, and encourages viewers to start chatting with him.

The Deliverable

One page on a personal website. Other pages would include examples of Jeff’s work, a contact page, and advice on gardening.

A well-designed garden: a beautiful way to boost your home’s value.

The sun is setting, and the children are loving the play area you had fitted to your garden. Bees hum around freshly planted lavender, and two sparrows take turns to drink from the new birdbath.

Stand up and you’ll see your refreshed garden in its full beauty. A beautiful paved footpath takes advantage of the local stone. Sharp grass borders highlight fresh flower beds with splashes of natural colour. And the fragrance is gorgeous, and a great way to relax after a busy day.

Jeff Miller designs garden for everyone. Small and large, ones with steep slopes and awkward corners – he can add any feature you desire. Whether you want:

  • a family garden,
  • a quiet retreat,
  • a wildlife haven,
  • a space to entertain,
  • a garden which isn’t too much work,
  • even a place to work,

Jeff can turn your ideas into a tranquil and beautiful reality.

He’s worked in horticulture for 18 years. He started as an RHS qualified gardener and trained as a garden designer with the acclaimed Garden Design School. He knows plants and their needs, and he knows how a well designed border, or a pond, or a cunningly handled slope can reveal a garden’s natural beauty. He has over a hundred satisfied customers dotted around Somerset.

Jeff specialises in making gardens easier to manage.

Do you want to see what your new garden will look like before the work starts? Jeff’s art and design training means you’ll receive sketches to hint at your new garden’s style. He’s happy to visit garden centres with you to choose plants which fit your standards, and can advise on seating, choice of building materials, ponds and fountains, anything which mixes the practical with the beautiful.

Jeff listens carefully to all his clients and is happy to change designs when needed.

He also designs with sustainability in mind. He’ll select plants appropriate for your garden’s conditions. Where possible, he’ll pick local materials and locally grown plants, along with bee-friendly and nectar rich plants. His choices can provide berries for birds, and he favours varieties with disease resistance, so you’ll need fewer chemicals.

He’s currently a pre-registered member of The Society of Garden Designers; he lives and works in Somerset, and knows the soil there like the back of his hand.

There’s a free consultation waiting for you, so if your garden needs work call him on 01823 XXXXXX. Prefer to write? There’s a ‘Contact Jeff’ page on this website.
